Learning to Swim As An Adult

January 29, 2016

I never make new year resolutions. Instead, I usually have both short-term and long-term goals. My #1 goal for 2016 is to learn to swim! This year is the first year I am a little nervous. I am trying not to be negative, but the struggle is real. I know this is the worst thing I can do before even starting something, but crap- di nerves jus tek ova mi mind ah body ennuuuh! Nevertheless, I need to put my big girl panties on and do the damn thing. In the past I have frolicked, body boarded, surfed, kayaked, snorkeled, wake boarded ---- all of which I have done without swimming. The good news is I love the water, so I have some confidence working in my favor.  I watched a video of a pig swimming and surfing and I felt a tad ashamed. How the heck can a pig swim? Yet, I cannot swim to save myself, if my yacht (this yacht is in my head) should sink... I digress because I have to just, DO IT!
I cannot answer this question, but I can only make a few assumptions about my personal upbringing and its connection to why I cannot swim.

1. My parents cannot swim. I've always loved the water, but my mom is afraid of the water, so I've always had a little fear of the water if my feet cannot touch the bottom.

2. I always went to the river as a young girl growing up in Jamaica, but never once did I swim. I would usually frolic with friends or take a bath. Yes, take a bath. When you are a country girl like myself, river baths are normal.

3. I almost drowned my sister in the said river when I was younger. Sorry, baby sis!

4. There were no swim classes in my community growing up. It is normal for rural areas in Jamaica not to have amenities, that are available in the city and tourist areas.

5. When I was growing up there were no Alia Atkinson. She is the first Jamaican to ever a medal in swimming at the Beijing Olympics. A gold medal! For more about Alia CLICK HERE.

At the end of the day, I am never too old to learn and I will learn to swim, I just hope this year will be the year. I am open to learning and I definitely won't let the cutest pigs in the world make me feel insecure :))) Also, I know that in my past life I was a mermaid and one day I will be one again. Mi nah goh fret! No sah! Mi nahhh Sweat nutten.
Check out the cutest pig ever, who can not only swim but surf.
While I cannot swim, I've mastered the art of capturing the perfect selfie underwater and pretending to dive. Anywhoooo, I want to encourage you to do something you have always wanted to do in your life. Something may be holding you back from even attempting, but fear not - YOU CAN DO IT! As for me, if pigs can swim, then I will tooooooo! :) I will keep you updated on my learning progress :)) Thanks for reading this post, until next time. Stay irie and blessed! Lxxx
